Health and Wellness in Naples wants YOU to know .... CPR classes are available for FREE!
I am a retired paramedic from Collier County and I know how to do CPR and use an AED, in fact, I feel so strongly about early intervention during a cardiac event that I own my own AED. I don't know if there is anything more humbling than to shake someones hand weeks after you have given them back their life by performing CPR.
First of all ... just what is an AED?
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. An AED is a portable, lightweight device about the size of a laptop and it automatically analyzes the heart’s rhythm, and if necessary, prompts the user to deliver a shock to the victim of sudden cardiac arrest. This shock, called defibrillation, helps the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm of its own. During its analysis, if the AED does not find it necessary to deliver a shock, the user will be prompted to attend to the patient and give CPR, if needed. AEDs are reliable, portable, durable, easy to use and maintain and almost anyone, with just a short class can operate one.

Then, of course, everyone should know CPR ... What is CPR?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions delivered to victims thought to be in cardiac arrest. When cardiac arrest occurs, the heart stops pumping blood. CPR can support a small amount of blood flow to the heart and brain to “buy time” until normal heart function is restored.
Trust me, I have used CPR not just in a professional capacity, but in restaurants and even at the beach ... sudden cardiac arrest kills over 220,000 Americans each year. More than 90 percent of these deaths occur outside the hospital setting. When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, the heart ceases pumping blood effectively. When this occurs, the victim immediately becomes unresponsive, stops breathing, has no detectable signs of circulation, and, without intervention, will die within minutes.
